Why the reef changes colour
Seawater absorbs the long wavelengths first: red is essentially gone by 5 m,
orange by 10 m, yellow by 20 m. That is why everything below the surface reads
blue-green, and why a sunken red hull photographs grey.
Divers carry a lamp to put the reds back at close range — the pigments were
never missing, only the light that reveals them.
